Fireworks

Unfortunately, Dada has been working the graveyard shift, so he had to sleep during the day today rather than enjoy the holiday with us. In order for us to make his surroundings conducive to sleeping, Connor and I spent the day at Grandma and Grandpa's. It was a perfect day. One of the first things we did was head over to their community pool. Luckily, not many people live in the community yet, so we basically had it to ourselves. At first, both Connor and Kenner were hesitant to get wet. They weren't too interested in the fountains, and certainly didn't want to get in the pool. They changed their minds fairly quickly, about the time their toes hit the nice cool water. Before long, it was a chore to get them out of the water.

After the pool, we let the boys run amok through the Elmo sprinkler Kenner gave Connor for his birthday. After running through the sprinkler a few times, they apparently decided picking up rocks and throwing them at each other was more fun. Typical boys. That's about the time we called it quits and pulled them inside for lunch. After lunch, of course, was naps. Neither one did very well as far as that goes. I think Connor woke up first, but Kenner soon followed suit. Since they were up, we went ahead and got stuff together for the picnic we were going to take to the park.

We played a few games and checked out the playground while Grandpa grilled up some burgers, brats, and hot dogs. The food was great, but would Connor eat any? NO. He wanted to keep playing. I think he finally ate a few potato chips and a grape or two. Very filling. After we cleaned up, we headed back over to Grandma and Grandpa's house, where Mischa had a surprise birthday cake waiting for her. Even though I'm usually Mean Mommy and don't let Connor have dessert if he doesn't eat his dinner, I did allow him a small piece of birthday cake. Of course he wanted more, but Mean Mommy had to put her foot down. By that point, it was getting late and since I had to work the next morning (and it was WAY past Connor's bedtime), we gathered our stuff together so we could head home. On our way out, Grandma gave Connor his own toddler safe "firework" - a glow stick. I thought for sure he would fall asleep on the way home, but the glow stick kept him fascinated for the entire drive. Once home, it was pointless to try to put Connor down to bed. The neighborhood kids were setting off fireworks in the street, right in front of our house. Connor's room was glowing with different colored lights. So he and I sat on our front porch watching the mini-show. However, before long the city's big firework display started up. We didn't have to move an inch to watch it, yet we ended up going up to his bedroom to sit in "Nanny's seat" to watch the finale.
